- 25 year old Peggy avoids cheese because they give her heartburn.

- Rob loves chocolate but he can’t have them just before he goes to bed because it makes him restless at night.

- Angie cannot eat potato crisps because it makes her nauseous.

What’s with these people and others like them? Or, is it something in the food?

Everyone wants food that looks good, tastes great and is easy to make and carry. Naturally, manufacturers have come up with a solution that keeps consumers happy – fast food. The preservatives, coloring agents and ‘permitted’ flavors (both natural and artificial) you take in through these foods are chemicals that are being introduced into the body. Then, there are the natural toxins and chemicals produced by plants and animals that enter the body from the food we take in. After a while, the stomach becomes a cesspool of dangerous chemicals.

We cannot keep on ingesting harmful chemicals and hope to carry on. At the end of the day, there is only so much we can stomach. Over a period of time, we step over the threshold limit of safe consumption. This is when chronic problems related to chemical and food intolerance hits us – in a big way.

The reason we are intolerant to chemicals is because of the body’s innate inability to break down most of the chemicals we take in. While some people may not have the enzymes that break down toxins and chemicals, others may produce corresponding enzymes in very low quantities. When these chemicals are not broken down and absorbed, you develop symptoms of chemical intolerance. Chemical intolerance produces undesirable effects in the long term.

The most common symptoms associated with chemical intolerance include headache, dizziness, vomiting, nausea, aching joints, allergies, tiredness and mood swings. While some people suffer minor discomforts, others are hit by chronic problems. So, there are no stereotypes here. Depending upon our age, habits and constitution, our capacity to tolerate chemicals also varies. How much and what kind of chemicals you can tolerate is unique to you. The reactions you suffer from are also unique. In chronic cases, chemical intolerance can even cause arthritis, chronic backaches, asthma and eczema. But, if you’re like most people who eat a lot of different foods, you will likely not realize that these symptoms are the result of chemical or food intolerance.

Most people are unable to identify chemical intolerance because the symptoms are insidious, subtle and often take some time to appear. Many times, even doctors miss the connection because of the time lag between food consumption and the appearance of symptoms.

So, here’s a tip: If you find yourself suffering from headaches, listlessness, tiredness, general weakness and uncontrollable hunger pangs, you might be suffering from food or chemical intolerance. Several studies have shown how people suffering from various unexplained illnesses have recuperated wonderfully when they changed their diet. Identifying the chemical or additive that triggers reactions in you will help you avoid foods that contain the offending agent. That way, you will be safeguarding your health for a much longer period of time and living life more comfortably.

By: quinlanmurray

About the Author:

Not only humans’ even animals are affected by food allergy. It mainly affects cars and is rated among the main causes of atopy, flea bite allergies. Cats usually develop allergies from constantly fed kind of foods.

Often cats are sensitive to a certain type of food ingredient. So, an antibody in their intestinal tracts responds, leading to food allergy. Among all other type of allergies, with a 10% ratio allergies caused by food are more prone to cats.

Food allergies affect male, neutered cats and also female ones. It is also a misconception connecting specific breed of cats to allergies caused by food. This condition can initially create symptoms for cats from four months young to eleven years old. But majority of food allergy cases occur between 3- 6 years in cats. These cats are also in connection with inhalant allergies.

.

The main difference between food intolerance and food allergy should be learned to correctly manage allergy in cats. Allergy caused by food are taken as true allergies revealing symptoms like itching and skin problems associated with feline and canine allergies. Incase diarrhea or vomiting happens without creating allergic responses, it means that it’s only intolerance of food. Cat food intolerance is similar to a human having a stomach ache or diarrhea as a result of consuming spicy food or eating food that is fried. By utilizing foods food intolerance and allergies can be prevented. This doesn’t offend the agents.

Many studies reveal that few ingredients of food are the main causes of allergies when compared to the rest. The main common causes in cats are dairy products, fish and beef. Many pet owners would have observed that the following ones are the main ingredients found in foods that are consumed by the cat. Even though few proteins are more antigenic, it still comes in similar forms. So, this reaction depends mostly on the quantity of exposure.

The symptoms of this allergy in cats are most likely the same to most kinds of allergies. But the major ones are excessive scratching, hair loss, military dermatitis and itchy skin. For pet owners it is difficult to distinguish cars that suffer from atopy or food allergy by physical signs. But, they must suspect food allergy if these symptoms begin to take place during winter or through out the year and the cats fail to respond to antihistamine or steroid treatment.

When you figure out the symptoms of different allergies in cats it is very simple to diagnose the allergy. Symptoms of food allergy are similar to that of bacterial, notoedric mange, hypersensitivity to intestinal parasites, seborrhea and yeast infections.

It is necessary to carry out food trials. Elimination and provocative testing diets could be done. One should feed the cat with foods that has carbohydrates, proteins for 11 – 12 weeks without any treats. A typical instance is potato and venison or potato and duck. These foods are commercially available in the market or could be homemade. Young and growing cats have special nutritional needs. Diets made at home containing a carbohydrate and a protein eliminating multivitamins and fatty acids could be fed for 12 weeks. Food trials for kitten are carried out by giving a commercially balanced diet. After few weeks, feed the cat with previous food that they once have consumed. Incase the symptoms are shown then it’s surely food allergy. Others perform blood testing which is not accurate when compared to trials (food).

Feed the cats with commercial diets from hill or Purina or homemade diets which makes treatment of allergy simple and easy.

By: Abhishek Agarwal

About the Author:

Food intolerance in the west is on the increase. More and more people are suffering with allergies to foods, substances and the environment.

You can recognise food intolerance when you suffer a physical reaction after having eaten a certain food.

The type of physical reactions most common include the break out in a rash or itchy fit. Or you suddenly experience difficulty in swallowing, or the swelling of the face, eyes or tongue. Nausea and dizziness are also quite common.

A lot of sufferers develop eczema over a period of months and years. Food intolerance is created through your eating habits or a dramatic health change.

Look at the following and see if you recognise any of these as habits you have developed.

Dry Skin Rash – How to Recognise Food Intolerance #1 – Do you intentionally vary the type of foods you eat on a regular basis? There are thousands and thousands of edible food plants on this planet. But as creatures of habit we usually eat between 10 and 20 of such foods regularly.

This predisposes us to having an altered immune reactivity to these foods. The nutrients we derive is limited and we are missing out on the opportunity to expand our nutrient base.

Dry Skin Rash – How to Recognise Food Intolerance #2 –

Are you someone that is prescribed antibiotics on a regular basis. Antibiotics tend to alter bowl bacteria and inhibit probiotics contained in the digestive system. Antibiotics affect the functioning within the intestinal lining.

Antibiotics lowers intestinal immunity and encourages growth of unwanted bacteria.

Worse still, repeated courses of antibiotics will cause some digestive imbalance and tends to encourage the rapid growth of yeast in the colon.

Dry Skin Rash – How to Recognise Food Intolerance #3 –

This one applies to women specifically, the long term intake of the contraceptive pill.

The contraceptive pill can cause food intolerance in certain people. Hormones in the pill affect certain liver detoxification enzymes. The contraceptive pill also depletes vitamins and trace minerals in the body.

By: Janet Simpson

About the Author:

Millions of us deal with food allergies or intolerances every day. Problems can range from the simple to the severe, but no matter what the type of food intolerance, it affects every social aspect of your life. If you or someone you know struggles with food allergies or intolerances, you already know that ordinary things like dining out, parties, business luncheons and family events can become a nightmare when you have to avoid eating what is offered, and make excuses for being rude.

Another common problem we share is finding food that actually tastes good. There are plenty of food substitutes out there on the market, but unfortunately, they are either far too pricey or they don’t even resemble the real thing in flavor or texture. There is hope though! Don’t think you have to resign yourself to a life of bland “special” foods anymore, and forget about enjoying meals, both at home and out!

As someone afflicted with celiac disease, an autoimmune disease which causes a severe reaction to gluten (one of the most common ingredients found in Western foods), I’ve struggled with finding food that will keep the painful and embarrassing symptoms at bay, but still tastes good enough to serve to others. Fortunately, since awareness of food allergies and intolerances is on the rise, you can benefit from fabulous recipe experimentation done by others who share in your restrictions. There are great resources available now in book form and on the Internet for nearly every gustatory limitation.

Here are some of my easy tips for gluten-free eating:

• Avoid mixes and recipes which use too much rice flour – it makes the food taste gritty and leaves an aftertaste.

• Add dairy or soy yogurt to your recipes for moist, non-crumbly baked goods.

• Applesauce is a great fat replacement that has the added benefit of holding your gluten-free goodies together.

• Be sure to check ingredients for hidden gluten – as an example, Rumford baking powder is gluten and alum free, while Calumet is not.

• Many cooking and baking sprays also contain flour, so check cans carefully while shopping.

You can also take steps to enjoy social eating again. Many restaurants and catering services are now making accommodations for food allergies and gluten intolerance – don’t hesitate to ask your neighborhood food businesses whether they would offer choices like this. If you take part in business luncheons, it’s a good idea to let the meeting planner know about your intolerance ahead of time. Chances are, they’ll be happy to make accommodations when they know in advance what to expect.

For parties and social gatherings, why not offer to bring a dish to share? You can introduce everyone to gluten-free or allergy-sensitive food, and you’ll know there will be something at the event you can eat, so you won’t feel awkward or left out. Dealing with food allergies and intolerances takes a little bit of extra preparation, but it does not have to restrict your life. Happy nearly normal eating!

By: Jules Shepard

About the Author:

Most medical doctors nowadays are giving much attention to food allergies and intolerance unlike before. Although there is no particular drug that can be used as treatment for food allergies, there are other alternatives that can be pursued to control your addiction to certain foods. Some doctors also prescribe vitamin supplements and other drugs that can be helpful in controlling your cravings for certain foods.

Jonathan Brostoff and Linda Gamin wrote a book which was published way back in the year 2000. It’s a book all about food allergies, food intolerance, and their treatments. If you want to get invaluable advice to achieve long-lasting and dramatic health improvements, this is the best book to add to your book collection.

This book explains how food sensitivities cause misdiagnosed and chronic ailments like migraines, persistent fatigue, and sinus problems. It also features a gradual process of identifying certain food allergies, intolerances, and helps you reshape your diet to achieve better health.

Some chronic ailments like the ones mentioned above remain elusive, and doctors find it quite hard to diagnose such ailments. If all conventional tests can’t provide comprehensible diagnosis, the likely culprits are food intolerance and food allergies.

You can find clear explanations about the causes, differences between allergies and intolerance, and various case studies on certain problems that the readers are quite familiar about. Most importantly, the needed solutions or treatments for such problems are also provided. Many charts and illustrations are provided, including an elimination diet divided into three stages and a gradual reintroduction food system.

If you suspect that you have a persistent condition that is linked to any dietary sensitivity, this book can provide you with the necessary information that you will need in achieving sound results. You’re not only improving your health, but your life as well.

Most critics gave the book high ratings and they claim that the texts are thorough and detailed. The critics recommend the book for public health collections and for the general consumers. If you’re studying about food problems and allergies, this is a must-have that you shouldn’t miss. Of course the book can’t please everyone, and there are those that say the book lacks adequate examination of complementary and/or alternative practices which most readers and allergy sufferers are looking for in a book.

Many consumers also gave the book high ratings. Most of them claim that it’s truly a helpful book that it unlocks the door that leads to the better understanding of food intolerance and food allergy.

The good news is that the book is sold at approximately $20, and is shipped to you in twenty four hours. If you can’t afford it, you can settle for used copies, but make sure that you get it from authorized dealers.

The authors of the book are Brostoff and Gamlin, and they are an honorary professor/consulting physician and biochemist respectively. Brostoff is highly recognized as the leading authority on intolerance and food allergy internationally while Gamlin specializes about health matters, allergies, and immune system. Gamlin is also a well respected writer.

So if anyone in your family suffers from any health condition and you think that it is brought about by food allergy, or perhaps food intolerance, don’t hesitate to buy the book. This is the key to discover what causes such health conditions.

By: Jack Sands

About the Author:

If there is an abnormal response triggered by the immune system, because of some food items, it is known as food allergy. There are various foods that cause allergy in humans. If the allergic reactions are very serious, it is capable of creating a serious condition or even death. Peanuts and tree nuts and two food items that cause a very serious condition called anaphylaxis.

There are some foods that cause allergies very commonly in humans. They are fish, such as shellfish, crabs and lobster with shrimp. There are some others such as eggs and even milk. Milk, eggs and nuts affect children especially. Soy and wheat are also responsible for food allergies in the body. Some reactions to food may not be called as allergies, but they may be called as intolerance to food. The immune system is not responsible for causing any intolerance to food. They may feel like a food allergy, and thus you will have to consult a doctor about the same. Some individuals may be allergic to various types of food, but there are certain foods, which cause allergies in about ninety percent of humans.

They are the food types mentioned above. The body will believe that these foods are harmful, and in turn will react to protest against the intake of them. The protein that triggers the food allergy is known as the allergen. There are several millions of people around the world who have food allergies, and the number is rising every day. About eight percent of children below the age of five have food allergies, and about four percent of the adults have them. There are about hundreds of deaths every year around the world because of food allergies. Food allergy will be distinct compared to food intolerance and other food diseases. Doctors will be immediately able to diagnose the same.

The treatment will include a list of food items, which you will have to avoid, in which the individual will have to avoid all the food types that they are allergic to. Inhaling or touching the food avoidance may also be recommended for those who are very sensitive to the foods. If the surface has come in contact with the food, then the surface will also have to be avoided. If certain people have food allergy, then it is recommended as they carry emergency kits, or as recommended by the doctor. There are various symptoms, which are associated with the food allergies. They are itching in the throat, skin, mouth and eyes. There could also be abdominal pain, stomach cramps, vomiting and nausea.

There can be difficulty swallowing or there could be nasal congestion. Some food allergies may be genetic, and this also has to be consulted with the doctor. If an individual faces symptoms of food allergy while consuming certain foods, then it is a must that they avoid such foods in the future. If consumed again, it could lead to serious conditions. Maintaining a history of food allergy is a good suggestion for such patients.

By: NaNa Dumro

About the Author:

For someone with a food allergy, eating or swallowing even a tiny amount of a particular food can cause symptoms such as skin rash, nausea, vomiting, cramping, and diarrhea.

Because the body is reacting to something that is otherwise harmless, this type of allergic reaction is often called a hypersensitivity reaction. Rarely, a severe allergic reaction can cause a life-threatening set of symptoms called anaphylaxis, or anaphylactic shock.

Although about 25% of people believe they have a food allergy, only about 2.5% of adults and about 6-8% of children, mainly younger than 6 years, have true food allergies. The rest have what is known as food intolerance an undesirable reaction to a food that does not involve the immune system.

It is easy to confuse food intolerance with food allergy because they can have similar symptoms. With food intolerance, however, you usually get only mild symptoms such as an upset stomach.

A common example of food intolerance is lactose intolerance a condition in which a person is missing a certain enzyme necessary to digest dairy proteins. The result is loose stools, gas, and nausea after consuming dairy products such as milk or cheese.

Another example of food intolerance is reaction to MSG. MSG, or monosodium glutamate, is a white-colored additive used to enhance the flavor of food. It is a fermented mixture of glutamic acid, sodium, and water and is used mainly in Asian cooking. Over the last 30 years, side effects from MSG have been related to its use in Chinese food and referred to as the Chinese restaurant syndrome.

In this syndrome, MSG was suggested as the cause of the symptoms following a Chinese meal. In 1995, a new term was coined, the MSG symptom complex, to include all the reactions that were reported to be related to MSG. These reactions are not a true food allergy, and the exact cause of the reactions is unknown.

An allergic reaction occurs when the body’s immune system overreacts to an allergen, in this case a food protein.

The white blood cells produce an antibody to this allergen, called immunoglobulin E or IgE. When this antibody comes in contact with the particular food protein, it promotes production and release of certain chemicals called “mediators.” Histamine is an example of a mediator. These mediators act on various parts of the body, mainly the skin, throat, airways, intestines, and heart.

The effects of the mediators on organs and other cells cause the symptoms of the allergic reaction. Any food has the potential to trigger an allergic reaction, but a few foods account for most food allergies.

Generally, people who have allergies react to only a few foods. Occasionally a person who is allergic to one food also may be allergic to other related foods. This is called cross-reaction. People who have a history of other allergies, such as eczema or asthma, are particularly prone to having a reaction to a food. They are also more likely to have a more severe reaction.

By: Alisha Dhamani

About the Author:

Approximately 8% of children and 2% of adults suffer from true food allergies. When the culprit food is eaten, most allergic reactions will occur within minutes. Skin symptoms (itching, urticaria, angioedema) are the most common, and occur during most food reactions. Other symptoms can include nasal (sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose and eyes), gastrointestinal (nausea, vomiting, cramping, diarrhea), lung (shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, chest tightness), and vascular (low blood pressure, light-headedness, rapid heart beat) symptoms. When severe, this reaction is called anaphylaxis, and can be life threatening.

Allergy or Intolerance?

Most reactions to food are probably not allergic in nature, but rather intolerance.

This means that there is no allergic antibody present against the food in the person. Intolerance can be classified as toxic and non-toxic. Toxic reactions would be expected to occur in most people if enough of the food was eaten, examples include alcohol, caffeine or in cases of food-poisoning. Non-toxic food intolerance occurs only in certain people, such as lactose intolerance, which is due to the deficiency of lactase, the enzyme which breaks down the sugar in milk and dairy foods. Patients with lactose intolerance experience bloating, cramping and diarrhea within minutes to hours after eating lactose-containing foods, but do not experience other symptoms of food allergies.

Non-allergic Immunologic Reactions

A less common form of non-allergic reactions to food involves the immune system, but there are no allergic antibodies present. This group includes celiac sprue and FPIES (food protein induced enteropathy syndromes). FPIES typically occurs in infants and young children, with gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, bloody stools, and weight loss) as the presenting signs. Milk, soy and cereal grains are the most common triggers in FPIES. Children typically outgrow FPIES by 2 to 3 years of age.

Common Childhood Food Allergies

Milk, soy, wheat, egg, peanut, tree nuts, fish and shellfish compromise more than 90 percent of food allergies in children. Allergy to milk and egg are by far the most common, and are usually outgrown by age 5 years. Peanut, tree nut, fish and shellfish allergies are typically the more severe and potentially life-threatening, and frequently persist into adulthood.

Cross-Reactivity and Cross-Contamination

Cross-reactivity refers to a person having allergies to similar foods within a food group. For example, all shellfish are closely related; if a person is allergic to one shellfish, there is a strong chance that person is allergic to other shellfish. The same holds true for tree-nuts, such as almonds, cashews and walnuts.

Cross-contamination refers to a food contaminating another, unrelated food leading to a “hidden allergy”. For example, peanuts and tree nuts are not related foods. Peanuts are legumes, and related to the bean family, while tree nuts are true nuts. There is no cross-reactivity between the two, but both can be found in candy shops and in a can of mixed nuts, for instance.

Diagnosing Food Allergies

The diagnosis is made with an appropriate history of a reaction to a specific food, along with a positive test for the allergic antibody against that food. Testing for the allergic antibody is typically accomplished with skin testing, although can be done with a blood test as well.

The blood test, called a RAST test, is not quite as good of a test as skin testing, but can be helpful in predicting if a person has outgrown a food allergy. This is especially true since in many cases the skin test can still be positive in children who have actually outgrown the food allergy.

If the diagnosis of food allergy is in question despite testing, an allergist may decide to perform an oral food challenge for the patient. This involves having the person eat increasing amounts of food over many hours under medical supervision. Since the potential for life-threatening anaphylaxis exists, this procedure should only be performed by a physician experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases. An oral food challenge is the only way to truly remove a diagnosis of food allergy in a patient.

Managing Food Allergies

Treat the reaction: If a reaction to the food is present, the person should seek immediate emergency medical care. Most patients with food allergies should carry a self-injectable form of epinephrine, or adrenaline (such as an Epi-pen, with them at all times. These medications can be prescribed by a physician and the patient should know how to use this device before an allergic reaction occurs.

Avoid the food: This is the main way to prevent future reactions to the culprit foods, although can be difficult in cases of common foods such as milk, egg, soy, wheat and peanut. Organizations such as the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network offer help and support to patients and parents of children with food allergies.

Allergy physicians can also offer additional information and advice on avoidance.

Read food labels: Since accidental exposure to the allergic food is common, reading labels on foods and asking questions about ingredients at restaurants is important and recommended.

Be prepared: Patients with food allergies should always be prepared to recognize and treat their reaction, should one occur. Remember, since exposures to the allergic foods are frequently accidental, being prepared to treat the reaction with epinephrine is paramount. Emergency medical care should always be sought if an allergic reaction to food occurs, whether or not epinephrine is used.

Communicate with others:Communication with family members, friends, and school staff about the patient’s medical condition and knowledge of how to administer epinephrine is also important. It is also recommended that the patient wear a medical alert bracelet (such as a Medic-Alert bracelet) detailing their food allergies and use of injectable epinephrine, in the case the patient is unable to communicate during a reaction.

By: Cindy Heller

About the Author:

Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder, which can be eased by keeping certain factors in mind. We have tried to list out few things that would be helpful to you in overcoming the problems like cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. We have a newsletter that gives a more comprehensive overview about the disorder and irritable bowel syndrome remedy options. But, here we suggest some of the basic irritable bowel syndrome treatments that would not only be helpful in helping ease the problem but also for leading a healthier life.

Most people will have experienced the feeling “butterflies” in the stomach when they are anxious. There is a proven nervous reaction in the gut that can cause a number of digestive related problems.

So, to help overcome digestive health problems and specially that of irritable bowel you need to overcome the stress, tension and problems of your life. Therefore, you need to learn a few stress management techniques, which once you start practicing should lead to a marked improvement in the IBS symptoms.

Continue reading to discover how to sign up for our Free Relieving IBS newsletter, and discover natural methods to relieve IBS.

One of the best ways to overcome stress and improve your health is to exercise regularly. Exercise boosts the metabolism, help strengthen the immune system, and also releases “happy” hormones and pain relief hormones, all of which can be helpful in treating this disorder.

Having a diet, which is high in fiber which, can prevent worsening of bloating and gassiness. Avoid having cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, brussels, cabbage, sprouts, beans and cauliflower, dairy products, fried and junk food, smoking and alcohol, caffeine products, sucrose, citrus fruits, wheat products and carbonated drinks.

As food intolerance has been shown to play a vital role in irritable bowel syndrome by triggering the hyperactive response in the gut, it is suggested to make a list of food you are intolerant to and those foods that trigger the IBS symptoms.

Also, some of the following natural remedies may help ease the symptoms:

1) Peppermint oil – Peppermint Oil is one of the commonly used remedies for treating irritable bowel syndrome. It helps in eliminating the excess gas in the intestines. But keep in mind that the excessive dose of peppermint can result in loss of appetite and nausea, and in more extreme cases nervous system disorders, heart problems, and kidney failure. It is advisable to consult your doctor before taking peppermint oil, especially if other mediation is being taken.

2) Probotics – Probotics are friendly bacteria present in the digestive system, which act as a protective barrier for the digestive tract. They improve the immune function and help by producing Vitamin K, which is thought to help with IBS symptoms. Various studies have suggested that irritable bowel syndrome causes imbalances in the intestinal flora resulting in an over growth of gas producing bacteria. Therefore supplementing with probiotics can help restore balance.

3) Partially hydrolyzed guar gum ((PHGG)- PHGG is non gelling fiber which can be effective in reducing constipation, diarrhea and abdominal pain in people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. Various studies reveal that PHGG also increases the amount of beneficial bacteria like lactobacilli and bifidobacteria in the intestines that help in relieving irritable bowel syndrome.

Although this article only covers a few of the best irritable bowel syndrome remedy options, we hope it has helped to clarify some of the options available.

By: Susan Reynolds

About the Author:
