The Most Common Symptoms of Allergies

Many people are familiar with the classic allergy symptoms: itchy nose, watery eyes, and sneezing. But these are only a few of the ways that allergies can manifest themselves. Nasal allergies, skin allergies, and food allergies have very different symptoms. Let’s take a closer look at the various discomforts caused by allergies.

Airborne Allergens

When your body breathes in something it doesn’t like, your immune system will respond. The problem for people with allergies is that their immune systems respond to everyday substances that don’t bother most people. Some common examples are pet dander, dust, mold, and pollen.

The first response to these allergens typically includes swelling of the mucous membranes, along with inflammation of the conjunctiva – the membrane that lines the eyelid. Allergic conjunctivitis produces red, watery eyes. Swollen mucous membranes result in nasal discharge.

Internally, the body produces chemicals called histamines in response to allergens. It then releases the histamines through sneezing, which causes more swelling and more nasal discharge. Without help, an allergic reaction can quickly turn into a downward spiral of misery.

People with asthma should take special care to keep their allergies under control. Inhaling allergens can provoke an asthma attack. The sacs in the lungs fill with fluid, leading to congestion, wheezing, and labored breathing. The membranes within the lungs swell, further restricting airflow. This can be a frightening and potentially dangerous situation for an allergy sufferer.

Contact Allergens

Contact dermatitis is an allergic response that occurs when a person’s skin comes into contact with an allergen. Certain fabrics, metals, and chemicals can cause allergic reactions. Latex is one example of a common skin allergen.

Skin allergies show up as redness and irritation on the exposed area of the skin. Eczema, skin rashes, bumps, and hives can also occur. Pain and itching are common complaints. Since most people come into contact with skin allergens through their jobs, the hands account for 75% of all contact dermatitis cases.

Food Allergens

Foods cause an allergic reaction in some individuals. While true food allergies are rare, they do exist. Their symptoms can be severe and even deadly.

Food allergies might cause swelling in the mouth and throat. As the throat swells, the airways become restricted. Wheezing and difficulty breathing can result.

Since food allergies provoke a system-wide immune response, they can also cause itching, rashes, hives, and severe fatigue. The digestive system can also respond with diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating, and cramps.

If you or someone you love is struggling with allergy symptoms, consult a doctor for a professional diagnosis. They will be able to test the severity of the allergies and prescribe a regimen to keep them under control.
